The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of interactivity and message framing on the intention to prevent infectious diseases using a hand washing game. A 2(interactivity: high vs. low) × 2(message framing: gain vs. loss) between-subjects factorial design was used to conduct an experiment. A total of 144 college students participated in the experiment. The results have shown that high interactivity group has more intention to prevent infectious diseases than low interactivity group. In addition, gain message group has more intention to prevent infectious diseases than loss message group. Finally, we also examined the interaction effect between interactivity and message framing on the intention to prevent infectious diseases. The results have shown that there is a significant interaction effect between interactivity and message framing, with gain messages being more effective in the high interactivity condition and loss messages being more effective in the low interactivity condition for infectious disease prevention. The finding of this study is meaningful because it provides practical implications for designing healthcare games for future health promotion and disease prevention by identifying persuasive effects of interactivity and message framing factors.
